Minnesota State Senator Nicole Mitchell Arrested for First-Degree Burglary

Senator Mitchell Faces Charges Following Incident at Residential Property

Arrest Highlights Political Challenges for Senate Democrats

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota state senator Nicole Mitchell was arrested Tuesday morning on suspicion of first-degree burglary. The arrest follows an incident at a home in Saint Paul on Monday evening.

According to police reports, officers responded to a call at around 10:30 p.m. regarding a possible burglary in progress. Upon arriving at the scene, officers observed Mitchell allegedly attempting to enter a residence through an unlocked door.

Mitchell was subsequently apprehended and transported to the Ramsey County Jail. She was formally charged with first-degree burglary, a felony offense punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

Mitchell, a 47-year-old Democrat, represents District 67 in the Minnesota Senate. Her arrest comes at an awkward time for Senate Democrats, who hold a one-seat majority in the chamber. Mitchell's absence could make it difficult for the party to pass legislation or conduct business.

In a statement, Senate Majority Leader Kari Dziedzic (DFL-Mpls) said, "Senator Mitchell's arrest is deeply concerning. We are reviewing the details and will take appropriate action once all the facts are known."

Mitchell is expected to appear in court later this week for a bail hearing. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
